At this point, we’ve all seen numerous trailers promoting the gorgeous cinematography and well-known storyline of Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming live-action adaptation, Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in (surprisingly) her first onscreen role since 2010′s The Tourist.

The film follows the success of Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp – which made oodles of money for the studio four years ago (and for which a sequel is currently in pre-production) – by tackling a reversal of the animated classic, Sleeping Beauty. In this version, the villainous Maleficent is front and center as viewers will learn what drove her to curse poor Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning).

Today, we have a batch of hi-res images from Maleficent courtesy of Stitch Kingdom. Check them out below:

These newly released images do little to provide any insight into the plot of the film, but instead serve to highlight just how much the two lead actresses resemble their cartoon counterparts. Jolie looks absolutely menacing wearing her horned headpiece, standing amongst the shadows in a shot reminiscent of the original. And Fanning is ever the innocent and sweet blonde maiden.

Disney is clearly banking on the fact that audiences will flock to see the film based on star appeal and nostalgia, because they haven’t released much in the way of other details. This begs the question of what more the studio can offer to those who already know Sleepy Beauty by heart. Not much if they’re unwilling to branch out from showcasing the basics. Even these latest stills only focus on the most iconic shots: One with Princess Aurora pricking her finger on the spindle and another of her waiting to awaken from a deep slumber.

Regardless, ABC’s Once Upon a Time – which showcases various fairy tales every week (usually with a twist) – has been popular since its series premiere, and we’re currently in the era of remakes and adaptations, so Disney is probably right that Maleficent will be big at the box office. In fact, they’re so confident that live-action adaptations of Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Cruella (from 101 Dalmatians) are currently in post-production or development, with more sure to come should any of these films become hits.

Are you excited to see these classics reimagined on the big screen for a new generation? Or would you prefer to see something more original? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
