Part of the greatness that came from the revival of The Muppets last year came from the stellar musical sequences. Jason Segel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller wrote the script, but Bret McKenzie, one-half of the comedic folk music duo Flight of the Conchords, was responsible for the music in the film. Now Collider has word from producer Todd Lieberman that McKenzie is returning to write some new music for the sequel that already has Christoph Waltz on board in a lead role taking the Muppets to Europe in a cross continent comedy caper. But most of the sequel will just be shot at Pinewood Studios.
In addition, Lieberman said there might be some new Muppets on board (though no official word on whether Walter will return). Production is supposed to begin in January, and the projected release date is December 2013, but that seems like an awfully fast turn around. Of course, the film made a big splash last holiday season, and plenty of audiences made it an event for their whole family to enjoy. Though Jason Segel isn’t returning, I have faith in director James Bobin to bring the magic of The Muppets back to theaters with Nicholas Stoller all over again. More casting news is expected soon, so stay tuned.
